Gelassenheit«
Using a
live internet transmission, Robert Luzar – who is based in Toronto
– and Timo Kube – who will be in Dortmund on site – will
converse together on the subject of friendship. Amongst other
references and in a rather personal dialogue about their friendship,
Luzar and Kube will touch upon Michel De Montaigne's essay "On
Friendship". Fundamentally they will ask: what kinds of
friendship are there and is there such a thing as a "true"
friendship? This question echoes Montaigne’s meditation on his
departed friend, Etienne de la Boëtie:“If I were pressed to say why I love him, I feel that my only reply could be: ‘Because it was he, because it was I.”
Inspired by Montaigne's essay, which is a meditation and a personal trial on ‘friendship’, Luzar and Kube also try to trace a timeless topic that continues to form a key element for ‘community’ in general. This raises further questions of whether or to what extent the concept of friendship itself has changed in a media-connected and socially competitive world? How then are we, in our friendships today, close or distant?
Video projections and sculptures will form an integral part in this presentation. Some of the works brought together were jointly developed, as some other works derive from each artist’s distinct artistic practice. As a whole, the installation forms one “voice” characterised by difference and mutuality. Video clips, for instance, show Luzar’s view outside a train window while he travels between Toronto and Ottawa – yet toward Dortmund. This incomplete journey, a distance divided geographically and virtually, is projected onto a screen made of soft foam. The video transmissions serve as allegorical images of a limited journey Luzar takes towards Germany but within Canada. The fact is that Luzar will not arrive in Dortmund, nor be with Kube in person. Nor will it be expected that the Internet connection remains constant, uninterrupted. Distance cannot be completely overcome.
For Luzar and Kube this presentation is a kind of aesthetic exercise of friendship as well as a friendship that must be practiced and sustained under a more open question of distancing and mutual release, or ‘Gelassenheit’.
